Banyan Tree Phuket

Banyan Tree Phuket has triumphed at the Condé Nast Traveler 20th Annual Readers\' Choice Awards, ranking 2nd in the Top 10 Asia Resorts category. The resort was also ranked 8th in the Top 100 Resorts of the world.

Situated at Bang Tao Bay on the north-western coast of Phuket Island in southern Thailand, Banyan Tree Phuket is a mere 20 minutes drive from Phuket International Airport and approximately 30 minutes from Patong Beach in the South and 40 minutes from Phuket Town.

Banyan Tree Phuket is located within the resort area of Laguna Phuket

About Laguna Phuket

Laguna Phuket occupies a 400-hectare former abandoned tin mining site and three kilometers of natural beach fronting the Andaman Sea. The land had previously been described as a “moonscape” and an area resembling a “war zone”. A 1977 United Nations survey of the tourism potential on Phuket had written off the 400-hectare site as too environmentally damaged to have any development potential. The soil, the report said, was so leached by chemicals used in the mining process and by marine clays, that it “would never sustain vegetation again”. Another survey, 10 years later, by the Tourism Authority of Thailand, reached pretty much the same conclusion.

The first step in restoring the area was to truck in enormous quantities of unspoiled soil and topsoil to re-contour and replant the land. Indigenous plant species that could thrive with little use of pesticides and herbicides were brought in. Fruit and flowering trees were planted to help attract wildlife back to the area. Trees, shrubs and grasses, which do not require much water, were a high priority as Phuket, like much of Thailand, suffers from terrible water shortage.

Today, you have the sense of having stumbled upon a hidden world, an exotic hideaway within what is already the tropical island retreat of Phuket. A road lined with casuarinas trees and palms open up to green expanses, fields of yellow Allamanda blossoms and lofty coconut trees lie against a backdrop of wooded hills, freshwater lagoons and the bright blue waters of Bang Tao Bay beyond.

The resort is unique in its design as an “Integrated resort” in which nine major hotels, serve clearly defined and very different market segments.
